One of the great things about soy wax candle making is that the wax melts at a lower temperature than some other mediums. So, you can even melt the wax in your microwave, stir in the dye and color, then pour into your container.
For microwaving:
Please remember to use a microwavable container to melt the wax in.
Pour the soy wax into your container. Add color. Microwave on high for approximately 2 to 4 minutes. Microwaves vary, so carefully monitor the wax to see when it is completely melted. Do not overheat, melt too long or leave unattended.
While the wax and color are melting, thread your wick through the wick holder over the glass. You’ll want to drip a bit of wax in the center of the glass, when it is melted, and push the wick into the soft wax and let it ‘set’ while your wax is cooling.
You’ll want to let it cool for about 10 minutes before pouring into the container. After the wax is melted and you’ve dripped a bit to ‘set’ your wick, add the fragrance and stir. Be sure to keep the wick centered while pouring so that the candle will burn consistently.
After the wax has cooled for about 2 hours, trim the wick to ¼ inch. Remember, the wick holder is reusable, you’ll want to save it.
For stovetop:
You’ll need two pots. Fill one half way with water and turn the burner on low. You don’t want to heat the wax too fast or overheat it. Pour the wax into another, smaller pot and set the smaller pot into the water. Add the color.
It should take about 6 to 8 minutes to melt the wax and color. If you are using a candy thermometer, it should be thoroughly melted before it reaches 170 degrees F. You’ll want to stir it to be sure the color is consistent. Drip a bit of the melted wax into the center of the glass to ‘set’ your wick and thread the wick through the holder.
When the wax and color are completely melted, remove from heat. Let the whole cool for about 10 minutes (if using a candy thermometer about 100 degrees F) before adding the fragrance and pouring into the glass. Be sure to keep the wick centered while pouring so the candle will burn consistently.
After the wax has cooled for about 2 hours, trim the wick to ¼ inch.
For Clean Up:
Remember, soy wax is dish soap and hot water clean up. You can use the double boiler method to melt any wax left in the container. Then, just wipe any excess wax out of the container with a paper towel and wash.
